New Rider/Family Information

The Evergreen High School Mountain bike team is a “club” sport open to riders of all abilities.  We are affiliated with the Colorado High School Cycling League (the League) (www.coloradomtb.org). In addition to being a co-ed team, we also welcome riders from area high schools without a team.

How to Join the Team

The first step to join the team is to join our TeamApp account. Click on the "Join Now" link above and Download TeamApp to your smartphone from the App Store or Google Play and search “EHS Mtb Team”. You can also let Coach Speers (aspeers@jeffcoschools.us) know you’d like to be added. This is the primary way that we communicate with the team about practices, races and other team events.

In addition, you must register with the Colorado League. Visit www.coloradomtb.org and click on Register.
Select Evergreen as your team and use the Pass Code: Evergreen_21. Code for 2022 race schedule TBA
his is where you will register with the League, sign waivers, and pay the League’s $150 membership fee. Once you do this, you will be ready to practice with the team. This is also where you will register for races in the fall. Mountain biking is NOT a Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) sport so you will NOT register or pay any additional fees with EHS Athletics.

Team Fee

Team booster club fees for 2021 will be $125 per rider. This covers team expenses as well as some of the costs for our volunteer coaches. The League fees of $150 per rider (see above) covers our insurance and coach training, as well as support for four weekends of world-class racing in the fall. Each rider will need to provide their own bike, helmet and other equipment like gloves, shoes, sunglasses, etc. If a rider would like to participate in races, you must purchase a team jersey (about $70 and up depending on desired style) and can also purchase optional items such as biking shorts, baggy shorts, socks, and different styles of jerseys.  In addition to the team jersey, If racing there will be race registration fees ($65 per race), and travel costs associated with attending the races.  If these expenses are difficult for your family, please let a coach know.  The team has funds set aside to assist and the League also provides scholarship money for racers.

Practices

EHS MTB team plans to host several pre-season social rides in June through mid-July. More formal practices will begin practicing around August 1st and will continue until the State race which is scheduled for October 23-24 this year. Team practices have traditionally been held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Alderfer/Three Sisters after school leaving the EHS parking lot at 3:00 pm. Additionally, we try to host Saturday practices at other local riding venues. The practice schedule when finalized will be posted on TeamApp. Per the League rules, at practices riders are required to be accompanied by trained adult coaches who have passed background checks. While attendance at practices is not mandatory, riders who do make that effort will see improvement. Additionally, if interested in “lettering”, riders should familiarize themselves with those attendance requirements.

Racing with the Colorado High School Cycling League

In the fall, riders can register to race with the Colorad0 High School Cycling League.  While racing is not required to be on the team, these events are really fun for the kids as well as families. We highly encourage participation!  Riders race as either Freshman, Sophomore, Junior Varsity or Varsity. Qualification, determined by the League, is required for Varsity and Junior Varsity if a racer is younger than a Junior. If racing, riders will register themselves for each individual race through the Colorado League.

Race weekends typically involve arriving at the venue the afternoon prior to pre-ride the course and to help set up the team tent. Team dinners are usually organized for that evening and families are invited to join. Race day lasts from 7 am to 4 pm.  Races are held at different times for each level (Freshman, Sophomore, JV and Varsity) starting at 8:30 am. The final race of the day starts at about 2:30 pm. Getting to the races does require individually arranged travel (there is no team bus) but carpools are easily organized. Camping is usually available near race venues or hotels are an option depending on your preference. Race days are very fun for racers and families with a festival-like atmosphere. Families are asked to volunteer to bring food for the team tent and/or volunteer for various jobs to help with the race.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities

The EHS Mountain Bike Team exists only because of our great teacher and parent volunteers and coaches! If interested in assisting with coaching, parents must pass background checks and obtain basic Level 1 certification. This process takes about two hours and is completed on-line. There are small fees for registration and background checks. To begin the process to become a coach, please contact Andrew Speers (aspeers@jeffcoschools.us) Amy Day (amy.day@me.com) or Chris Hennessy (chris@hennessy-consulting.com). In addition, we need parents to help organize team events, race weekend food, photography, public relations, etc! To help with these types of activities, please contact Amy Day (amy.day@me.com).
